This is the only documented Harriet Tubman led escape through the headwaters of the Nanticoke River. The State of Delaware is preparing an historical marker to be placed at Seaford’s Gateway Park. Herb Quick and Pat Jones, Co-Chairs of the Seaford Harriet Tubman Memorial Committee, met in Gateway Park with City of Seaford and Delaware State Archives officials on this matter.
The Seaford Harriet Tubman Memorial Committee was established to investigate the feasibility of an appropriate physical memorial to be placed in that same park. The proposed memorial will not be a descriptor of the historic escape through Seaford. It will, instead, pay homage to the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman, the American abolitionist and humanitarian.

"The Delaware Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club was formed on August 24, 1997. The founder , Ken "Dream Maker" Thomas, President of the Chicago Chapter granted our acceptance and thus Delaware became the 4th Chapter to be formed. Chicago being the first, Maryland second and Florida third.

The original Delaware Chapter members were Tim Duker, Robert Joshua, Alphonso Davis, Brian Gillis and Roy Walker. Roy Walker is currently the President of the Delaware Chapter" as are those who continue to serve.
On Saturday, August 11th, 2012 (near the Seaford Sports Complex and during the opening ceremonies of the Eastern Shore AFRAM Festival) a group of celebrants gathered to memorialize and honor the lives and sacrifices of their African ancestors. The tribute took place at the restored slave cabin which now sits next to the Ross Mansion on the estate/plantation of a previous governor of Delaware.LOCAL HISTORY & CONNECTIONS:

Our colors represent a long history and we wear them with pride and respect. Our colors pay homage to African Americans of the 9th and 10th Cavalry who sacrificed their lives so that our country could be what it is today. They are a badge of courage, sacrifice and honor as are those who continue to serve.
The cabin stands as a symbol of the disparity between the lives of the planters, and their slaves - the people who not only produced their wealth but also maintained their daily life, and attended to the comfort of their families often for generations - leading up to the Civil War and Emancipation.
The relocation of the Eastern Shore AFRAM festival - from its original home in Nutter Park, to the Seaford Sports Complex, near the Jay's Nest, and Seaford Library - created a unique opportunity for this somber observance on such a significant and historic site. All visitors to the festival were welcomed to witness and participate in the event which included an African libation ritual offered by Dr. Donald Blakely, State Representative of the 34th District (Dover, DE) .
At the end of the ceremony a memorial wreath was presented as a tribute to the memory of the ancestors here, and throughout the Diaspora. The procession receded back to the festival grounds accompanied by African drums by SANKOFA of Dover, DE.

A Solemn Memorial Tribute
to the Ancestors
In October, 1856, Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave herself, led a slave named Tilly to freedom utilizing an Underground Railroad route through Seaford, DE.
“Tilly’s Escape” was thoroughly researched by Jim Blackwell, a member of the Seaford Historical Society.
Last summer, Mr. Blackwell submitted an application to include Tilly’s Escape in the National Parks Service’s Underground Railroad Program Network to Freedom. It documented Harriet Tubman and Tilly’s Underground is is the only documented Harriet Tubman led escape through the headwaters of the Nanticoke River. The State of Delaware is preparing an historical marker to be placed at Seaford’s Gateway Park. "The National Association of Buffalo Soldiers & Troopers Motorcycle Club (N.A.B.S.T.M.C) is an organization of professional men and women that are
dedicated to the sport of motorcycle riding and safety. We ride our motorcycles [Iron Horses] to represent the horses that were ridden by the Buffalo
Soldiers during the 1800's. Our objective is to educate those that are unfamiliar with the racism, sacrifices and hardships that the Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalries had to endure. Our vision is to instill this knowledge into the minds and hearts of our youth of today so that we can motivate them to become better citizens and leaders of tomorrow. We feel by doing this the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers of the past will live on forever and shall not be forgotten.
We are contributors in our local communities and throughout the Western Frontier by supporting charitable needs and educating others, especially our youth. Our efforts are pursued in regards to the large sacrifices that were made by not only the Buffalo Soldiers but other African and Native Americans during the pre- and post- civil war periods. We believe that these are the core values needed to help install self respect and pride in today's youth.
